Podíváme-li se na statistiky do zemí, kde je eutanázie a asistovaná sebevražda legální, zjistíme, že počty osob, které se rozhodly pro ukončení života tímto způsobem rostou.
V Belgii za rok 2022 vzrostl počet případů eutanázie téměř o 10% – „The number of cases of euthanasia in Belgium rose by 9.85% over the previous year in 2022, according to figures published on February 17 by the Federal Commission for the Control and Evaluation of Euthanasia (CFCEE).“
V Kanadě je nárůst také zřejmý – „In 2015 there were none; in 2021, the last full year for which there are statistics, there were 10,064. On current trends another 10,000 died in 2022.“
V Kolumbii je tento trend také zřetelný : „The increase has been steady: 7 in 2016; 17 in 2017; 24 in 2018; 43 in 2019; 34 in 2020, and 95 in 2021.“
Velmi často pak tyto narůstající počty vedou k problematickým praktikám – např. darování orgánů pro účely transplantací v průběhu procesu zjišťování podmínek pro podstoupení eutanázie – „Up to 2021, ODE was performed 286 times in Canada, the Netherlands, Spain, and Belgium, including eight cases of ODE from home (ODEH). MAiD was provided 17,217 times (2020) in the eight countries where ODE is permitted. As of 2021, 837 patients (up to 14% of recipients of DCDD donors) had received organs from ODE. “
Výzkumy, které by se zabývaly nárůstem počtů eutanázie nejsou k dispozici a lze tedy jen spekulovat, co je důvodem stálého nárůstu počtu provedených eutanázií.
